I find myself when I go out to eat some Texas barbecue ordering beef ribs. Well, if no one else I'm at the table orders them. It's not my favorite but my girls love the bones so much. It's the only kind of bone I will let them have. They are huge but it doesn't take them long to gnaw them down to nothing at all. I never notice any side effects like I do when I've given them rawhide chews which often makes them gag or throw up. And with that pleasantry, we wish you a happy holiday weekend.

Rawhide chews are scary toxic crap! They gives Teddy the squirts. I have discovered frozen organic bones - you can get them at some kennels and shops locally - I use the ones from Nature's Variety, one of the organic/raw food companies. Hours of chewing fun, down to sucking out the marrow, and they remain interesting for days afterwards. You have to match the shape to your dog's chewing habits - we once got one that Teddy swallowed a chunk of, and while it's all digestible, he did have a tummyache for a day after - but they are great natural chew treats that give the dog a workout while enjoying them. Plus, they seem to clean his teeth!
Hey, thanks John for the heads up.
Yesh, rawhide is horrible and can kill dogs, we have heard horror stories! Mom gives us really and really hard bones that she gets from a specialty shop and ones that come from inside the US. You never know what other countries put into their pet stuff.
If you are looking for them locally, I know you can get them at Auburn Kennels on Campbell Road just off I-10 (although they're been having trouble with stock from Nature's Variety lately - this morning they had the ones from Bravo, a well known BARF diet oriented company. I've also gotten them at the chi-chi little pet store in Rice Village (called the dog bowl or something). Molly's Mutt House in Garden Oaks has some kind of no-brand ones. I'm guessing some of the other kennels around town have them too.
I had no idea those rawhide chews were bad. This is good info for when I do get a dog.
Lucy looks very adorable here!
We've been making yams for Sam and Monty - although nothing is better for tiring a dog out than a good rawhide bone. The trick is to by from a known brand, made in the USA. There is no guarantee though.

I don't want to be overly dramatic - the rawhides aren't death in a bag and many dogs chew them and are fine -but they're just not as good, IMO, as other things you can easily get. They can contribute to tartar buildup on your dog's teeth, and they are highly processed. And frankly, they're not a very good buy either; a frozen raw bone gives them hours of enjoyment and a bit of a workout, and the net cost isn't much different.
The dog gets some bits of meat and marrow, as opposed to what is basically leather (processed skin) in the rawhides.
You should of course supervise your dog w/ bones or rawhides, especially when they are new to the dog, and always have lots of fresh water around (which you should always have anyway).
That said... lots of dogs have rawhides and are fine. I have just found that bones and bully sticks provide as much enjoyment for him without all the processed crap. Mine's got a bit of a sensitive tummy and frankly, rawhide gives him the squirts. Not good for him or fun when it's yard pickup time.
One note related to that: if your dog has bones regularly, and you don't clean up the poop in the yard daily, you may notice that the old ones turn white when they lie around. Don't freak out! This is just because insects and other organisms in nature have digested the parts that are their diet (yuck, but it's all just nature in action), leaving calcium behind. While your dog's bathroom activities can give you warnings about health problems, a bone-chewing dog's poop turning white when it lies around is normal. (The first time I saw it, I thought it was pretty weird and read up on it.) (Of course, if it comes out that way, it's probably time to go to the vet!)
I remember our dogs loved steak bones more than anything else.
I try not to leave it lay around John. Flies are bad enough here in Texas. But I can overlook a job or two and I have noticed they turned white. Thanks for the info!
