I don't miss the 16 miles and 26 stop lights to Millie Bush Bark Park but I do miss the Sunday mornings spent with sweet Lucy and Sable there.

Have Some Fun This Weekend!

North To Alaska

 Well, not really, just up Highway 6 north to Millie Bush Bark Park over the weekend.

 To say the girls and Joe were a bit anxious would be putting it mildly.

 It's just as bad as taking kids to Disneyland.

 I love getting at the park before sunrise.  Plus, we had a cold front move in and it was quite nice in the lower 50's!

 Lucy and Sable wasted no time getting in the water.

 They were letting off lot's of steam.

 Joe got to run endlessly.  Every so often, he would return from the other end of the park to chase, annoy, Lucy and Sable.

 Lucy and Sable will not leave my side.  Joe, on the other hand,  is on the run.  I feel as though I am not a responsible pet owner letting him run wild.  So many owners come into the park and either walk the track or sit and talk on the cell phone and never give their dog a second thought.  I need binoculars to keep tabs on Joe.  He's like a greyhound.  He can cover some territory.

Lucy was glad to get in the warm truck.  They were so quiet on the way home.  They slept all day yesterday.

One thing as a pet owner I have never regretted is that of getting the second dog.

They love one another whether Lucy will admit it or not.

Lucy and Sable have meshed quite well together.  Yes, they are quite different personality wise but they are always in search of the other it seems when they are a part.



What was I thinking?  It has been waaaaaay too hot to take my girls to the park mid day.



Tongues were hanging low in no time at all.

It didn't take me long to learn that they preferred the shade over swimming.

It's A Bite

Sable waits patiently for the vet.  She was a good girl although she tried to hide under me.  She had been bitten in her ear.  I could see it better once the vet shaved around the ear.  Of course it's infected now so she's on a course of antibiotics.  At least I know what the situation is and that I will be wrestling her twice a day to clean the wound.

Of the 8 years taking my girls to the dog park I have never heard Sable growl at another dog.  The other dog had to come around us at least three times before the incident happened.  Lucy on the other hand has never liked other dogs coming around me or her for that matter so it's typical of her.  I've had to separate her more than once but Sable...  I'm still surprised.

Wordless Wednesday

Oh What A Feeling!

We have had a beautiful few days here in southeast Texas so I took the girls to Millie Bush Bark Park. We haven't been in a while. To think we used to go almost every Sunday morning.

It doesn't take Lucy and Sable long to get in the water. It had to be a bit chilly since the temps were in the low 50's the last couple of nights.

Nevertheless, they love the water. I keep thinking Joe might surprise me and get in the water one day. It hasn't happened yet but who knows? We were going for almost 6 months I believe before Sable would get in the water and swim.

Keeping their eye on the prize. Daddy messed up and forgot to take a ball to the park. Luckily I found a faded one that still had some bounce. I don't know if it's their eye sight or what but I notice they like the brightly covered tennis balls the best.

Wow! A picture with all three of my babies. Joe did a run by a few times to let us know he was still around. I think he covered the entire 15 acre park.

This pooch kept making rounds and eventually got into a scuffle with Sable. Yes, I said Sable. Sable NEVER has shown any aggression towards another dog at the park. I was kind of shocked to hear Sable growl and then all hell broke lose. I was trying to stay cool and not make an ass of myself. I was sticking the ChuckIt stick between them and finally the other dogs owner ran up and pulled her dog away. I checked her ears and neck and she seemed okay. Sable has always stood back and watched Lucy be the bad dog/guard dog so this was a new one on me.

After almost 3 hours at the park, the dogs are laying low all evening. Sable is limping around as usual after a workout. Hopefully, she will be better by tomorrow evening.

Beating The Heat

I took my pack of dogs to Millie Bush Bark Park early yesterday morning in an attempt to beat the Texas heat. Tropical storm Don gave us no relief from the drought or the high temperatures. As you can see Lucy and Sable wasted no time to get in the water. It had been too long since their last swim.

They love the water and it was actually a bit cooler than I thought it would be.

I know this because they always come straight to me before shaking off the water.

They enjoy the running too but I try and keep it at a minimum since they are both getting arthritic in their hips. Plus it wasn't long after we arrived the temperature was in the upper 80's and that's a bit warm.

Yes, Joe was with us too.

Lucy and Sable spent most of the time swimming and fetching.

Lucy has loved the water since her first encounter as a puppy.

Joe shows no interest in the water. Running and getting chased is his game of choice. Would you look at those paws. It's like having my own pony.

He would make an occasional run by to see us but for the most part spent his time running from end to end of the 8 plus acre park.

His tongue would get longer and longer as time went on. The only sign the exercise and heat had any effect on him.

Let me just say the energy level on the way home is quite different than the level shown on the trip to the park. It's quite nice actually as they hover around the air conditioning vent.

Ahhhhh, nothing like the smell of a wet dog in summer.

By the time the sun gets up in the sky, the heat is on.

That's why getting to the park by 6:00 AM is best. We can get almost an hour of play time in before the sunrise.

There were a lot of friendly dogs there as usual.

But just walk on by please. Lucy is no park greeter. She's a guard dog!

Lucy and Sable just want to do one thing and that is swim for the ball.

It's sad to see them slow down. It's like when precious children turn into sulky teenagers. You know it's an end of a wonderful phase of life. Of course they are more energetic in the cool months.

They still seem puzzled over the parched Texas soil.

How Was Your Holiday Weekend?

We left home in twilight to get to the park early. Thankfully since it was a holiday the traffic was light.

Lucy and Sable head straight for the water.

I'm amazed at how many dogs are at the park but don't get in the water. My girls love the water. Although, it did take Sable a few months when she was a pup.

I noticed they get tired after about an hour and a half of fun.

By 8:00 AM there were several at the park.

As dogs greeted Lucy and Sable coming out of the water Lucy behaved pretty good. She only went off on one dog all morning. Maybe she's getting mellow in her old age?
